Cats Den: America East Quarterfinals – Vermont vs. UNH

Today, it’s the start of the America East Tournament. Vermont faces New Hampshire in a quarterfinal matchup, with coverage starting at 11:30 am on 101.3 ESPN FM and
1) Win the battle on the boards
Vermont has outrebounded UNH by a combined 24 in their first two matchups. One of the primary reasons the Catamounts struggled at Binghamton was because it was a rare game in which they didn’t dominate the glass.
2) Don’t let Jordan Bronner get going
No, Bronner isn’t normally the type of player to take over a game, but the UNH guard will be entering this game with extra motivation. The Iona Prep grad won a state title with Brian Voelkel and Sandro Carissimo in high school. After routinely getting crunched by his former teammates in the America East, the senior is looking to grab the last laugh.
3) Start strong
This wins the prize for the most commonly cited key this year. Only fitting that it makes its return at the start of the postseason. Coach Becker pointed out that in his tenure, UVM has had some trouble at the beginning of America East Quarterfinal games. Slow starts have also sometimes been a problem this year. Gotta take the belief out of the Wildcats early.
Clancy posted 25 points and ten rebounds against Binghamton. In a foul-heavy contest, Rugg was 19-21 from the line. He’s now only 45 points away from 1,000 on his career. The 25 versus the Bearcats gave him a realistic chance to reach that mark.
America East Coach of the Year John Becker is the only coach in conference history to start his tenure as a head coach with three straight 20-win seasons. Congrats, Coach!
