Cats Den Blog: Vermont vs Albany
by AJ Kanell,posted Mar 9 2014 2:07PM
It wasn’t as easy as some may have expected, but you know what they say: ”A win’s a win.”
After a 77-60 win against New Hampshire, Vermont heads to the America East tournament semis, where they’ll face Albany. Unfortunately, the America East preliminary rounds are being played in Albany’s home building, SEFCU Arena, so that’ll be an additional challenge for UVM to work around.
Coverage of Sunday’s showdown starts at 4:30 p.m. on 101.3 ESPN FM and 1013espn.com
3 KEYS TO THE GAME
1) Continue to contain the other team’s best
All season long, Vermont has done a superb job against the opponents’ stars. Peter Hooley and Sam Rowley have been severely limited in the teams’ previous matchups this season, and if UVM can do the same on Sunday, it’ll swing the odds way in its favor.
2) Feed off the crowd
Instead of only focusing on the negative – the messed up reality that for the third straight year the top seed in the America East has to play a true road game in the conference tourney – let’s remember the positive. There was a huge amount of Catamount fans in the house for the UNH game, and there will probably be even more present on Sunday. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a 50-50 split between Cats and Danes supporters. When the road team’s fans travel well, it can become a huge boost.
3) Don’t be blinded by the hideous Albany shorts
But seriously, they’re gross.
PLAYER SPOTLIGHT – BRIAN VOELKEL
Voelkel, the only Division 1 player with 1,000 career rebounds and 600 career assists, earned his first career triple double on Saturday. He collected 10 points, 10 assists, and 14 rebounds. Voelkel is the first player ever to get a triple double in the America East Tournament. And it’s amazing it took this long in his career for him to get one. He’s been so close so many times.
NUMBER TO KNOW – 16
Vermont continued its conference dominance last time out against New Hampshire. In conference only games, UVM leads the America East in 16 of the 19 major stat categories. The Catamounts are now 16-1 in conference games this season.
